Our book, the project we are most proud of.
Description: An inspirational book about women and their fight with breast cancer containing
the experiences of 18 women with emphasis on how they can STILL ...
The book, 11 x 8.5 in landscape format, contains approximately 150 pages with
about 180 color and black & white photographs and the stories of each of
the women portrayed.
Fate intervened to bring Aline and British photojournalist Derek, who happened to be
in Oklahoma City covering a story about Women on Death Row, together. The idea
to put together a collection of photographs of women with breast cancer came
soon after Aline had a few photos of herself taken just days before a second lumpectomy
of her left breast.
The story of Aline Menezes details her encounters of the past three years and
photographically documents every step of her battle with cancer from biopsy and
diagnosis to the last stage of full breast reconstruction. Aline’s journal
talks about the fears and concerns about being diagnosed with cancer, the
decision making process on her treatment options, the surgeries, the people
around her, etc.
The women that joined Aline in the book were given the opportunity to be photographed
doing whatever they wanted to do, wherever they wanted to do it. This led to
some interesting scenarios, from riding a horse dressed as Cleopatra and
singing Aida, to one lady’s reflective moments in the gardens of a convent.
The book encompasses women of all races; Hispanic, Asian, Native American and
African American are all represented, as well as Caucasian. Different social
and economical backgrounds are featured. The cancer ties between siblings is
also documented.
The photographs of Aline show her STILL dancing, flying her stunt kite, watching a
soccer game in Brazil, up a tree in the Amazon and other exciting adventures.
A portion of proceeds from
the sales of the book will go to cancer related organizations.
